Planning a wedding during a pandemic crisis: Coronavirus

As Covid-19 spreads all around the world and more places are under lockdown, stress level and uncertainty rises. Daily life has been disrupted and if you are amidst planning your wedding, a bunch of questions are probably on your mind. You might feel that the dream wedding you envisioned has probably turned into a nightmare. Don’t despair, you are not alone in this one. For those of you planning your wedding in Puerto Rico, we are all under lock down and the wedding industry is all affected. Here are a few things to consider:

To cancel or to postpone

We totally understand that you want to keep your friends and family safe. CDC cites that large events can contribute to the spread of the virus. But, in my opinion cancelling your event is not entirely the way to go. One alternative is to be legally married now and have your big event later when things clear up. Postponing instead of cancelling will also be a great help for the economy. With large and small business having to stay close the economic hit of the lock down is immeasurable. But, in the end the most important thing is to bring your loved ones together when it is safe.

Be flexible

Wedding vendors are typically booked a year in advanced. It is time to think outside the box. Weddings are usually held Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Saturdays are usually the most popular day of the week for weddings. Changing your wedding to a weekday means you are more likely to change your event date to a date sooner than later. Available wedding dates are going to be tricky after the lockdown stops.

Check the restrictions on your vendor agreements

Each vendor has its own set of rules and restrictions when it comes to payments, retainer fees and money devolutions. Read thoroughly their agreement, since you might be hooked on paying for everything you booked in case of cancellations and even if postponing your event. Not all vendors are flexible and you should check out who is beforehand. If you are reading this and haven’t booked your vendor, make sure you read the fine print and you are all on the same page. This could save you a lot of money.

Book your trips with flight and travel insurance

If you decide to postpone and need to purchase new flights book your trips with insurance. But make sure your insurance covers cancellations for any reasons. As I always say, make sure to read the fine print. Some companies will cover if you area is under quarantine while others won’t.

Wedding insurance

At the time it’s debatable whether wedding insurance covers Coronavirus, but it’s certainly something to consider since if it weren’t a pandemic it could be something else that forces you to cancel or postpone your wedding.

2020 has shown us that we need to be able to adapt. When it comes to weddings the main goal is to marry the person you love. But, it doesn’t hurt to be proactive instead of reactive.
