Finding Outdoor Places Beyond the Usual Puerto Rico Landmarks for your Next Couples Session
When couples book a Puerto Rico adventure couples session, they often arrive with a specific location in mind. A famous waterfall, a dramatic mountain, a beach everyone recognizes from Instagram. And I get it. If you’re traveling somewhere beautiful, you want to experience the places you’ve seen in photographs.
However, after photographing couples all over the island, I’ve learned that the most memorable locations aren’t always the ones with the biggest names.
I spend a lot of my free time outside, too. I hike, sport climb, mountain bike, and explore Puerto Rico without a camera in my hand. Somewhere along the way, I started noticing places differently. I’ll pass an overgrown trail, a forgotten river, or a stretch of road with incredible light and think, wait… this would be such a good session.
That has become one of my favorite parts of being a Puerto Rico couples photographer. Finding the potential in places that most people simply drive past.

Do You Really Need a Popular Location for Your Puerto Rico Couples Session?
Popular locations can be beautiful. But they can also be crowded, complicated, and surprisingly restrictive for a photo session.
You might spend time finding parking, hiking to the location, or waiting for other people to move. Meanwhile, the light keeps changing and your session time keeps ticking. Some locations also become difficult during busy hours. You may have limited space, other photographers working nearby, or a constant stream of people passing through your photographs.
Then there is the reality of weather and seasonality. A waterfall can look completely different after a dry spell. A trail can become muddy after rain. A popular overlook might have beautiful scenery but harsh midday light. None of that makes these places bad. They simply aren’t always the best choice for photography.
Therefore, popular doesn’t automatically mean better for photographs. Sometimes the location that looks ordinary when you’re standing there gives me much more to work with than the landmark everyone drove across the island to see. That’s because I’m not only thinking about what the location looks like. I’m thinking about what we can do there.

What I Look for When Choosing a Puerto Rico Couples Session Location
When I scout locations, I’m looking at things that aren’t always obvious from a Google search.
- Light – First, I look at how the sun moves through the space. Where will the light fall during our session? Will we have shade when we need it? Strong tropical sun can be beautiful. It can also be unforgiving. So I think about timing before we ever arrive.
- Texture – Rock, water, trees, old structures, dirt paths, tall grass, and tropical vegetation all give us something different to work with. A location doesn’t need a dramatic landmark. It needs visual texture.
- Color – I also pay attention to what’s happening seasonally. Puerto Rico changes throughout the year. Trees bloom, rivers rise and fall, vegetation shifts, and different areas take on completely different colors. You can’t beat the beauty of flaming trees during summer! Sometimes a little seasonal detail makes the entire session.
- Privacy – This one matters more than people realize. Can you actually relax here? Can you kiss, laugh, wander, or sit together without an audience watching? For a candid Puerto Rico couples photography session, that space can make a huge difference.
- Variety – I want a location that gives us several possibilities without requiring you to hike for hours. Ideally, we can move a little and create completely different photographs.
- Movement – Most importantly, I want there to be something to do. Can you walk? Climb? Sit by the water? Explore? Hold hands and wander around?
I’m not just looking for somewhere beautiful. I’m looking for somewhere that gives us something to do. That is what helps the photographs feel like an experience rather than a collection of poses.

When the Original Plan Goes Up in Smoke
This particular session is a perfect example. We had planned to photograph this couple in a river canyon. It was beautiful, adventurous, and exactly the kind of setting we had envisioned. Then we arrived and there was a wildfire in the area. The location was no longer an option, so we had to bolt.
Outdoor sessions come with this possibility. Weather can change. Trails can close. Rivers can rise. Sometimes nature simply says, not today.
Luckily, this couple wasn’t attached to having everything go exactly according to plan. Instead of panicking, one of them pulled up Google Maps satellite view. She started looking around the surrounding area for another possibility. Not long after, we found a bridge with a river nearby. We decided to give it a shot. ¡Y me alegro que lo hicimos!

Sometimes the Best Photo Locations Are the Ones You Didn’t Plan For
The backup location turned out to be something completely different from what we had originally imagined. There was a river running beneath the bridge, lush vegetation surrounding the water, and Flamboyán trees blooming everywhere. There were even wild horses wandering through the landscape. Then I noticed the color of her dress. That deep orange-red was almost exactly echoed by the flowers around us. De verdad, it felt like the landscape had accidentally coordinated itself for them.
The location wasn’t some famous Puerto Rico landmark. There wasn’t a sign telling us we’d arrived somewhere important. Yet photographically, it gave us everything I wanted. There was depth. There was movement. There was color. There was texture. There was privacy.
And most importantly, there was room for them to simply be together. The backup plan ended up feeling better than the original plan.

What the Camera Sees Isn’t Always What You See
This is probably the hardest part of choosing a location from a Pinterest board or Instagram. You see a location as a place. I see it as a photograph.
A client might pull up somewhere and think, This? Really? I might already be thinking about the direction of the light, the foreground, the background, the colors, and where I can place you within the landscape. Part of my job is seeing the photographic potential in a place before you necessarily see it yourself. That doesn’t mean every random location is secretly amazing. It means I know what I’m looking for. So when I suggest somewhere that isn’t on every travel blog, I hope you’ll be open to it.
You don’t have to know exactly what the photographs will look like beforehand. You don’t even have to understand immediately why I picked the location. Sometimes you just have to trust the process a little.

Why I Recommend Exploring Beyond Puerto Rico’s Popular Locations
If you’re planning an outdoor couple’s session in Puerto Rico, you don’t have to choose a location because you’ve seen it 500 times online. Instead, we can start with what you actually want from the experience. Maybe you want a little hiking. Maybe you want water. Maybe you want mountains, forest, rocks, or somewhere completely quiet. Maybe you want something adventurous without spending half the day trekking to get there.
Those things matter when choosing a location. I also consider the time of day, season, weather, light, accessibility, privacy, and how much variety we can create once we’re there. And if you’ve already seen the same five Puerto Rico locations on Pinterest, that’s okay.
You don’t have to choose one just because everyone else did. There is a whole island beyond the places that make the tourism lists.

Planning a Puerto Rico Couples Session?
If you’re planning a Puerto Rico adventure couple session, come with an open mind. Tell me what you want the day to feel like, how adventurous you want to get, and what you’re excited to experience together. From there, I’ll take care of the location scouting and the photographic side of things.
I also want you to know that outdoor sessions rarely go perfectly according to plan. And that’s part of the fun. If the original plan changes? Pues, we figure it out.
Some of my favorite sessions have started with a plan and ended somewhere completely unexpected. If you’re ready to get started, you can explore more about Puerto Rico couples sessions, browse my portfolio, or get in touch to tell me a little about your plans.
