Tips For Nailing Your Beach Engagement Photos in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico Wedding Photographer

If you are planning a beach engagement session in Puerto Rico these tips are for you!

Prioritize Sunrise and Sunsets

There’s no twilight in Puerto Rico. That means that to work with the best light possible during your beach engagement session, the time is shorter than in continental USA or other parts of the world. I know waking up early is rough, but if you want empty beaches and beautiful soft light, make sure to hit that espresso shot as early as possible. I always check sunset and sunrise times on this chart:  https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/puerto-rico/san-juan. It would give you an idea on how early or how late your beach engagement session should be. Don’t worry if the day is overcast. This is actually perfect for beach photos, specially in Puerto Rico where sunlight is extremely harsh.

Don’t Worry About the Shoes

I’ve had clients wear high heals to their engagement beach sessions… if that is your jam, I get it. But, for more relaxed and natural pictures comfort is key. Walking in the sand is way better bear footed! Dipping your toes on the beach and heck why not dipping yourselves in the ocean!

What to Wear

This is a tropical Island, and most of the time the weather is hot and humid. Wear light and airy fabrics. Don’t go the white-on-white route because you might get lost in your pictures. Don’t be afraid to wear some color. With all that blue from the sky and the ocean, oranges, marrons, tan, yellows, sages, they all look beautiful! Leave out busy patterns, extremely baggy clothing or overly coordinated outfits. Whatever you decide, the most important thing is to wear something you feel comfortable in.

What to Bring

Props can help you loosen up during your session. Blankets to throw on the sand, beach chairs, a paddle board kit, frisbees or a bottle of bubbly! These are all fun items that can easily be incorporated into your beach session.

What not to worry about

Don’t worry about posing!  Most of the couples I photograph, the first thing they say is they don’t know how to pose. And that’s 100% normal! I try to guide my clients so they can feel comfortable enough to show their personalities. It’s mainly a thing of trusting your partner and have a little fun with it. Don’t be afraid to be silly or feel awkward. Sometimes the best pictures turn out to be the ones you feel the quirkiest at.
